The Campo Imperatore plateau extends for over 20 km as a vast high-altitude karst moor (between 1,600 and over 2,000 meters above sea level) of breathtaking beauty, the closest thing to Tibet that can be found in Europe. Preserved nature and wildlife, as the entire plateau is part of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The well-marked trail network spans several hundred kilometers with routes of varying difficulty, also connecting the medieval villages of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, Calascio with its Fortress, and Castel del Monte.
In addition to the high-altitude trails leading toward Corno Grande, Monte Gorzano, and the highest peaks—which can only be safely hiked in summer—the Park offers hiking experiences of various levels and difficulties.
These rely on hundreds of marked trails created with the contribution of the Italian Alpine Club, which also include long-distance itineraries such as the Gran Sasso Bridle Path and the Sentiero Italia.
Many of these routes are also possible in spring and autumn, while some can even be tackled in winter, although the presence of snow requires the use of crampons or skis.
