Campo Imperatore Plain

Campo Imperatore is a vast plateau of glacial and karst-alluvial origin, dominated by the Gran Sasso d’Italia massif (2,912 m). It is situated between 1,500 and 2,100 m above sea level in the province of L’Aquila, in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is home to the ski resort of the same name, an astronomical observatory, and an alpine botanical garden. It is the largest plateau south of the Alps, dubbed “Little Tibet” by early explorers and famous for the numerous flocks and herds of cattle that have grazed there in the summer for millennia.

Voltigno Plain

At 1,383 meters above sea level, the Vado di Focina, on the eastern slopes of the Gran Sasso range, is a gateway to the Voltigno plain. The Voltigno is a wonderful mountain basin of karst origin. In winter, it is the ideal place for ski touring and snowshoeing; in a couple of hours, you can reach the summit of Mount Cappucciata. In spring and summer, you can take long walks immersed in the local floral varieties.

Stiffe Caves

The Stiffe Caves are a series of karst environments located in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of
San Demetrio ne’ Vestini (AQ), within the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. They represent an almost unique phenomenon in central Italy as they are an active resurgence of the Rio Gamberale, which forms on the Rocche plateau above.

Tirino River

The Tirino River originates from three springs—hence its name—in the territory of Capestrano in the province of L’Aquila. It crosses the entire Tirino Valley, flowing for about 15 kilometers in a southerly direction
before entering the province of Pescara.
It could be just another waterway, but this Abruzzo river is considered the clearest and cleanest in Europe. The river’s course alternates between deep blue and emerald green, becoming
completely transparent in some stretches.
