The Basilica of Collemaggio

The Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio is one of the city’s most iconic monuments. It stands
just outside the medieval walls of L’Aquila and houses the remains of Pope Celestine V.

MUNDA National Museum of Abruzzo

Following the 2009 earthquake, the MUNDA was moved to Borgo Rivera in the former slaughterhouse premises,
pending the restoration of the Spanish Fort. On display are around sixty archaeological finds and approximately 110
works including paintings, sculptures, and goldsmithery, dating from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era. These masterpieces
bear witness to the identity, history, and cultural vitality of the entire region.

Fountain of the 99 Spouts

The Rivera Fountain, known as the 99 Spouts, is perhaps the most representative monument
of L’Aquila because it is linked to the city’s foundation legend. It is located in Borgo Rivera, one of
the oldest districts in the historic center, close to the Aterno river.

Spanish Fort

The Spanish Fort was built as part of a grand project to strengthen the military presence in the
territory during the Spanish rule of Southern Italy. Until 2009, it housed the
National Museum of Abruzzo. It is possible to visit the paleontological section, which features the skeleton of
a Mammoth discovered in the 1950s near the city.
