Church of San Pietro in Albe

The Church of San Pietro is located on the hill of the same name and overlooks the archaeological site of Alba Fucens in the municipality of Massa d’Albe, in the province of L’Aquila. Built over a pagan crypt belonging to the Temple of Apollo, the Christian church still preserves sculptural evidence from the Cosmatesque school.

Bominaco Abbey

Bominaco, a hamlet in the municipality of Caporciano, is home to a site of incredible artistic value: the Monastery of Bominaco, of which the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Oratory of San Pellegrino remain. The splendid Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the early 12th century and houses masterpieces such as the 1180 ambo and the abbatial chair. The Oratory of San Pellegrino, rebuilt in its current form in 1263, features a remarkable cycle of frescoes that entirely covers the walls and vault, representing the pinnacle of Abruzzo’s pictorial decoration from the second half of the 13th century.

Church of Santa Maria ad Criptas

The small Church of Santa Maria ad Criptas is one of the first local examples inspired by Gothic forms.
The interior follows the Cistercian model with a single nave divided into three bays. The absolute uniqueness of the church lies in the two distinct cycles of frescoes that entirely cover the interior. The first cycle, in the apse, on the southern wall, the triumphal arch, and the counter-façade wall, is the work of Byzantine-Cassinese artists; the second is by painters of the Tuscan school.
