It is situated between 1,500 and 2,100 m above sea level in the province of L&#8217;Aquila, in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is home to the ski resort of the same name, an astronomical observatory, and an alpine botanical garden. It is the largest plateau south of the Alps, dubbed &#8220;Little Tibet&#8221; by early explorers and famous for the numerous flocks and herds of cattle that have grazed there in the summer for millennia.<br\/>Countless trekking opportunities and experiential activities such as Cinetrekking (For info: Gran Sasso Guides and I Viaggiatori nel Parco Associations +39 3407100218)  <\/p>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Voltigno Plain<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 1,383 meters above sea level, the Vado di Focina, on the eastern slopes of the Gran Sasso range, is a gateway to the Voltigno plain. The Voltigno is a wonderful mountain basin of karst origin. In winter, it is the ideal place for ski touring and snowshoeing; in a couple of hours, you can reach the summit of Mount Cappucciata. It crosses the entire Tirino Valley, flowing for about 15 kilometers in a southerly direction<br\/>before entering the province of Pescara.<br\/>It could be just another waterway, but this Abruzzo river is considered the clearest and cleanest in Europe.
